Early, yesterday morning, there was an apartment fire in Valley City that directly and indirectly impacted four of our Hi-Liner students and an employee of the school district. The fire caused the death of one individual and displaced all of the other residents. Below, I linked the story yesterday from Ryan Cunningham with NewsDakota.
https://www.newsdakota.com/2024/10/23/breaking-fire-claims-one-several-rescued-at-valley-city-apartment-complex/
We have two families (two VCHS 7-12 students) that have been displaced from their residence at the apartment and are temporarily living in a hotel or with family in Valley City. It is our understanding that the two families were able to get back into the apartment yesterday afternoon to collect clothes and personal belongings. Today, in addition to providing counseling services for the students, we would like to send out an opportunity for our school and community to offer financial support for the two families that will be incurring unexpected costs for laundry, hotels, personal belongings, and food.
If you would like to make a financial contribution for the two Hi-Liner families displaced from the apartment fire, please drop off a check or cash at the district office at 460 Central Avenue N. Yesterday, we received a lot of requests from both our school and community wondering how they could help these individuals. While we received a lot of quesitons about donations of clothing, furniture, food, etc., we believe right now the best way to help the families is through a monetary donation.
Thank you for your support of our Hi-Liners and families here in Valley City ⚪️🔵

This evening, our VCHS band students, under the direction of Ms. Rebecca Elliot will be performing at 7:00pm in the Hi-Liner Activity Center. With the support of Landon's family, we hope that this performance will honor Landon and his dedication to the band program. A moment of silence and freewill donation will be offered during the concert. Landon was a VCHS sophomore student that was actively involved and dedicated to the band program. Landon passed away on Sunday, May 7th.
Please attend tonight's VCHS Band Concert and help us gather as a Hi-Liner community to support our students and the family of Landon Storly.

Valley City Public Schools will have No School on Thursday, April 6th. Tomorrow, our county and state plows will need plenty of time to open the rural roads that have been blocked because of drifting snow. We encourage everyone to continue to follow the local and state advisories related to the road conditions and travel alerts. A special thank you to all of the men and women of our city, county, and state road crews and emergency services that have battled the snow for the past five months.

Based upon the blizzard warning beginning tomorrow morning at 6:00am and the forecast provided by the National Weather Service, Valley City Public Schools will be using virtual learning days on Tuesday, April 4th and Wednesday, April 5th. A decision regarding school on Thursday, April 6th will be made on Wednesday afternoon/evening. If school is cancelled on Thursday, we will not be using a virtual learning day or making up this day before the end of the school year.

We understand that the road conditions have been deteriorating this afternoon due to the wind and blowing snow. A travel alert has been issued and a no travel advisory is likely to be in place in the next hour. As a result, we have cancelled after school practices at VCHS. The junior high dance has been postponed, stay tuned for more information regarding a possible make-up date for this event.
Our junior and senior track teams are competing right now at Concordia College in Moorhead. A communication will be shared soon with track parents regarding the team's plan as a result of the travel alert.
Please travel safely and be alert to changing road conditions.

Undoubtedly, it has been a challenging winter for us northerners. Two years ago, we made the decision in our school district to operate our own snow removal. While this has saved the school district thousands of dollars, it has added a lot of responsibility for our custodians, facilities, and maintenance staff. Please help us give a shout-out to Jordyn Heck, Aaron Heck, and all of our school custodians (Mary, Danny, Corey, Hayden, Dalton, Brenda, Mark, Brian, Ransford) for removing our snow from our parking lots, sidewalks, and entrances. Thank You!!
